ASSATA’S MISSION

Assata provides a holistic, student-centered program that focuses on meeting students’ educational, basic, and social needs.

Assata integrates Common Core State Standards and historic contributions and experiences of African-Americans as a means to provide a culturally relevant curriculum. Students are given opportunities to display their comprehension of content area standards and/or cultural knowledge through visual or performing art projects.

Our culturally relevant curriculum is taught by sensitive instructors, who are familiar with multiple pedagogical methods necessary to promote learning and personal development. We promote learning by scheduling academic monitoring sessions (biweekly with teachers/students), recognizing students’ achievements, and displaying student artifacts. We promote personal development by offering social/emotional services/activities, social clubs, sports, life skills training, restorative practice, and college/career explorations.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

The Assata Program is open to any student between the ages of 15 through 18 who are identified as a child at-risk. Parental permission is required for enrollment as Assata believes true education is a cooperative collaboration between home and school. Students may be denied admission due to capacity enrollment.

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

Each student has access to the following support:

  • Open-entry, open-exit individualized curriculum

  • Regular educational curriculum with computer assisted remediation and review, as necessary

  • Family & student counseling, if necessary

  • Career exploration

  • Parenting classes

  • Before and after school tutorial program

UPON ENROLLMENT

Each student is assigned to an Educational Coordinator who works with both the student and parent to assess academic and personal skills. The Educational Coordinator also acts as a college and career counselor, family liaison, and an attendance monitor.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) provides a school psychologist and a social worker for student support and assistance as a part of his/her contract with Assata High School.
